7 Simple Winter Beard Care and Maintenance Tips
1. Use Less Shampoo
You’ll need to keep your beard clean throughout the winter, but you have to cut back on the shampoo. Cut it way back—perhaps to about just twice a week. The shampoo will strip away much-needed moisture that keeps your beard in tip-top shape in the dry winter air. Just stick to water to rinse your face and beard to remove any buildup.
2. Forgo Hot Water
Nothing sounds better than a nice, hot shower to keep yourself warm this winter. But the thing is, hot water is a big no-no in a winter beard care regimen. It strips hair and skin of natural oils and causes brittle hair. Go for a cool shower when possible, to seal your cuticles and keep your beard moisturized.
3. Dry Well
Pat your beard dry, instead of rubbing with a towel. This will give you less split ends, follicle damage, and irritation. Beards trap water naturally, and leaving all that extra moisture insulating around your face will have the same effect as having a hot shower.
4. Brush and Comb It
Brushing helps maintain your beard while keeping it in good form. It helps distribute the much-needed beard oil evenly throughout your face mane, protecting it from the dreaded winter dryness. It also promotes healthy beard growth and stimulates circulation.
Moisturizing is the key to your winter beard care regimen. Here are some products you should use:
- Beard oil – Apply a few drops right after your shower. You can apply during the day and/or at night to see what works better for you.
- Beard balm – Use this after putting beard oil.
- Conditioner – Use this even on days you’re not shampooing your beard. You can use this around 3-4 times per week.
6. Stroke, Don’t Pluck
Many men secretly grow beards for the satisfaction of touching it several times a day. Touch all you want, but resist picking at it. Picking can cause patches, infections, and ingrown hairs in your beard, and a patchy beard can lead to the shaving off of a beard — which means your winter beard care regimen has failed. Stroke instead of pluck!
7. Cover Your Beard
You may have seen an adventurer looking all rugged and awesome with ice in his beard, but that does not fare well as winter beard care. When outside in freezing conditions, cover your beard with a scarf and wipe off the rain, snow, or ice to keep it from drying it out. Ice can leave your beard hair brittle and more prone to breakage.
